Water quality - Detection and enumeration of the spores of sulfite-reducing anaerobes (clostridia) - Part 1: Method by enrichment in a liquid medium

This part of ISO 6461 specifies a method for the detection and enumeration of the spores of sulfite-reducing anaerobes (clostridia) by enrichment in a liquid medium.

Water quality - Detection and enumeration of the spores of sulfite-reducing anaerobes (clostridia) - Part 2: Method by membrane filtration

This part of ISO 6461 specifies a method for the detection and enumeration of the spores of sulfite-reducing anaerobes (clostridia) by membrane filtration.

Water quality - Evaluation of membrane filters used for microbiological analyses

1.1 This International Standard specifies a method for the evaluation and comparison of water-testing membrane filters intended for the enumeration of specific organisms and mixed microbial populations. 1.2 The method provides general guidelines for comparative testing of the recoveries of bacteria, yeasts and other fungi on membrane filters, as compared to recoveries by the spread plate and pour plate techniques.

Water quality - Detection and enumeration of intestinal enterococci - Part 2: Membrane filtration method

This part of ISO 7899 specifies a method for the detection and enumeration of intestinal enterococci in water by membrane filtration. This part of ISO 7899 is especially intended for examination of drinking water, water from swimming pools and other disinfected or clean waters. Nevertheless, the method can be applied to all types of water, except when a large amount of suspended matter or many interfering microorganisms are present. It is particularly suitable for the examination of large volumes of water containing only a few intestinal enterococci

Water quality - General guidance on the enumeration of micro-organisms by culture

This International Standard presents guidance for carrying out manipulations which are common to each technique for the microbiological examination of water, particularly the preparation of samples, culture media and apparatus. It also describes the various enumeration techniques available and the criteria for the choice of a particular technique. This International Standard is mainly intended for bacteria, yeasts and moulds. Some aspects are also applicable to viruses and parasites.

Water quality - Detection and enumeration of Escherichia coli and coliform bacteria - Part 1: Membrane filtration method

This part of ISO 9308 describes a reference method (Standard Test) for the detection and enumeration of Escherichia coli and coliform bacteria in water for human consumption. The Standard Test is based on membrane filtration, subsequent culture on a differential agar medium and calculation of the number of target organisms in the sample. The Standard Test has a low selectivity, allowing the detection of injured bacteria. Due to the low selectivity, background growth can interfere with the reliable enumeration of coliform bacteria and E. coli, for example in some drinking waters, like shallow well waters, that have not been disinfected and yield a high background growth. This part of ISO 9308 is therefore especially suitable for disinfected water and other drinking waters of low bacterial numbers. This part of ISO 9308 includes a rapid method (Rapid Test) for the detection of E. coli only within 24 h in water for human consumption, which can be useful in special cases when information is needed quickly. The Rapid Test is based on membrane filtration, subsequent culture under selective conditions and calculation of the number of E. coli in the sample. Standard and Rapid Tests described in this part of ISO 9308 are applicable to other kinds of water provided that suspended matter or background flora does not interfere with filtration, culture and counting.

Water quality - Detection and enumeration of coliform organisms, thermotolerant coliform organisms and presumptive Escherichia coli - Part 2: Multiple tube (most probable number) method

This part of IS0 9308 specifies a method for the de- tection and enumeration in water of coliform organisms, thermotolerant coliform organisms and presumptive Escherichia co/i (presumptive E. co/i) by culture in a liquid medium in multiple tubes and calculation of their most probable numbers in the sample. This method can be applied to all types of water, including those containing an appreciable amount of suspended matter. The choice of tests used in the detection and confir- mation of the coliform group of organisms, including E. co/i, can be regarded as part of a continuous se- quence. The extent of confirmation with a particular sample depends partly on the nature of the water and partly on the reasons for the examination. In practice, the detection in water of presumptive E. coli as defined in 3.3 of this part of IS0 9308, usually provides an indication of recent faecal pol- lution.

Water quality - Detection and enumeration of Escherichia coli and coliform bacteria - Part 3: Miniaturized method (Most Probable Number) for the detection and enumeration of E. coli in surface and waste water

This part of ISO 9308 specifies a miniaturized method for the detection and enumeration of Escherichia coli (E. coli) in surface and waste water by inoculation in a liquid medium. The method is applicable to all types of surface and waste waters, particularly those rich in suspended matter. This method is not suitable for drinking water and any other type of water for which the guideline is less than 15 counts per 100 ml. This method is not appropriate for enumeration and detection of coliform bacteria other than E. coli.

Water quality - Practices for evaluating and controlling microbiological colony count media used in water quality tests

This International Standard covers the comparison and evaluation of the Same medium prepared from different lots of materials. lt also covers the comparison and evaluation of dif- ferent media which are used for the Same purpose. lt only deals with the finished product ready to be tested, and not media formulation or preparation. This method applies to the evaluation of any solid media intended for bacteriological isolation and enumeration procedures.

Water quality - Detection and enumeration of bacteriophages - Part 1: Enumeration of F-specific RNA bacteriophages

This part of IS0 10705 specifies a method for the detection and enumeration of F-specific ribonucleic acid (RNA) bacteriophages by incubating the sample with an appropriate host strain. The method can be applied to all kinds of water, sediments and sludges, where necessary after dilution. In the case of low numbers, a preconcentration step may be necessary for which a separate part of IS0 10705 will be devel- oped. The method can also be applied to shellfish extracts. Depending on the relative abundance of F- specific RNA bacteriophages to background organisms, additional confirmatory tests may be necessary and are also specified in this part of IS0 10705. The presence of F-specific RNA bacteriophages in a water sample generally indicates pollution by wastewater contaminated by human or animal faeces. Their survival in the environment, removal by widely used water treatment processes and concentration or retention by shellfish resembles that of foodborne and waterborne human enteric viruses, for example the enteroviruses, hepatitis A virus and rotaviruses.

Water quality - Detection and enumeration of bacteriophages - Part 2: Enumeration of somatic coliphages

This part of ISO 10705 specifies a method for the detection and enumeration of somatic coliphages by incubating the sample with an appropriate host strain. The method is applicable to all kinds of water, sediments and sludge extracts, where necessary after dilution. The method is also applicable to shellfish extracts. In the case of low phage numbers, a preconcentration step may be necessary for which a separate International Standard will be developed. NOTE It is desirable for International Standards to be adopted as widely as possible. This part of ISO 10705 includes reference to alternative procedures which obviate the need for expensive materials or equipment which may not be readily available in developing countries. Use of these alternatives will not affect the performance of this method.

Water quality - Detection and enumeration of bacteriophages - Part 3: Validation of methods for concentration of bacteriophages from water

This part of ISO 10705 specifies the general principles for assessing the performance of methods for the concentration of bacteriophages from water. Concentration is recommended for those water samples expected to contain < 3 pfp (plaque-forming particles) per millilitre. Concentration methods can be applied to all kinds of water provided that the amount and nature of suspended solids and/or dissolved matter do not interfere with the concentration procedure. This part of ISO 10705 does not give specific details of concentration methods, but outlines the fundamental principles for evaluating the suitability of a particular method for a given type and volume of water. Annex A gives examples of methods that have been found satisfactory and their fields of application.

Water quality - Detection and enumeration of bacteriophages - Part 4: Enumeration of bacteriophages infecting Bacteroides fragilis

This part of ISO 10705 specifies a method for the detection and enumeration of bacteriophages infecting Bacteroides fragilis by incubating the sample with an appropriate host-strain. The method is applicable to all kinds of water, sediments and sludge extracts, where necessary after dilution. In the case of low phage numbers, a preconcentration step may be necessary for which a separate International Standard has been developed. The method is also applicable to shellfish extracts. NOTE It is desirable for International Standards to be adopted as widely as possible. This part of ISO 10705 includes reference to alternative procedures which obviate the need for expensive materials or equipment which may not be readily available in developing countries. Use of these alternatives will not affect the performance of this method.

Water quality -Detection and enumeration of Pseudomonas aeruginosa - Method by membrane filtration

This International Standard specifies a method for the isolation and enumeration of Pseudomonas aeruginosa in samples of bottled water by a membrane filtration technique. This International Standard specifies a method for the detection and semiquantitative enumeration of thermotolerant Campylobacter species. The method can be applied to all kinds of filterable waters. NOTE 1 The method can also be used as a presence/absence test for Campylobacter species in a specified sample volume. NOTE 2 A more quantitative result can be obtained using a most probable number (MPN) set-up (see ISO 8199).

Water quality - Detection of Salmonella spp

This International Standard specifies a method for the detection of Salmonella spp. (presumptive or confirmed) in water samples. It is possible that, for epidemiological purposes or during outbreak investigations, other media are also required. WARNING — It is possible that the method does not recover all Salmonella ser. Typhi and ser. Paratyphi. NOTE For a semi-quantitative approach, most probable number (MPN) tests can be performed using appropriate sample volumes. For these cases, the volume of the buffered peptone water is adjusted accordingly.

Water quality - Sampling for microbiological analysis

This International Standard provides guidance on planning water sampling regimes, on sampling procedures for microbiological analysis and on transport, handling and storage of samples until analysis begins. It focuses on sampling for microbiological investigations. General information in respect to the sampling from distinct water bodies is given in the respective parts of ISO 5667.

Lasers and laser-related equipment - Test method and classification for the laser-resistance of surgical drapes and/or patient-protective covers - Part 2: Secondary ignition

This part of ISO 11810 is applicable to disposable and re-usable, as well as woven and non-woven materials used as surgical drapes and/or patient protective covers which claim to be laser-resistant. The purpose of this part of ISO 11810 is to provide a standardized method for testing and classifying surgical drapes and/or patient protective covers with respect to laser-induced hazards. An appropriate classification system is given. It is not the purpose of this part of ISO 11810 to serve as a general fire safety specification. This part of ISO 11810 is limited to testing the secondary ignition of materials that are rated Ι1 or Ι2 from ISO 11810-1. All materials reflect portions of the beam and it is necessary for the user to decide whether specular reflection may be a hazard. This measurement, however, is not covered in this part of ISO 11810. The results of this part of ISO 11810 are not to be applied to other wavelengths and temporal formats. The 20 W CO2 laser (continuous wave) has been selected as the laser to be used for this part of ISO 11810. NOTE Users of products tested by this method are cautioned that the laser resistance of a surgical drape and/or patient protective cover will be wavelength sensitive and that a surgical drape and/or patient protective cover are better tested at the wavelength for which it is intended to be used. If tested using other wavelengths, the power settings and modes of delivery need to be explicitly stated.

Technical aids for disabled persons - Environmental control systems for daily living
